John Hindmarsh

I have since found out that John Hindmarsh was drowned in the Ganges on 2nd Sept 1839, when a boat capsized and he was apparently dragged under by a crocodile. He was postmaster at Diamond Harbour Calcutta at the time, having retired as a Captain of a merchant ship. He married Caroline Jones on 16.12.1834 in Calcutta.
He was the eldest son of Ralph and Sarah Hindmarsh, Newcastle on Tyne

Looking for John Hindmarsh, b C1800 Newcastle, son of Ralph, Master Mariner and Sarah Scott

I have information about the Stanton family who emigrated to Nelson, New Zealand, in 1842 on the Clifford, also John William Theodore Lechner, who arrived circa 1848, also in Nelson.

I am also trying to find out thet truth of a family story that John Hindmarsh was appointed to be Harbour master at Calcutta as a reward for his help as a merchant seaman in the Napoeonic wars. There is a vivid description of his Indian wife watching him, from the balcony of his home, being drowned by a crocodile in the Ganges, when a boat carrying him and others capsized and he was thrown out.The others got back in but he was taken before they could reach him. A finger with his ring on it was found a few days later. This story sounds pretty fanciful, but there must be some truth somewhere - I haven't had any luck online even finding out if he really was the harbour master, or whethe he had issue. On-line references are usually to a more famous John Hindmarsh who was the first governor of Adelaid and had a distinguished career.
